about

Sam - Guitar

Recorded some time around late 2011/2012.

These were songs that grew from some leftover ideas I had for earlier projects, but never came together fully.

I - was something that was developed whilst studying for my degree and was played as a three piece once live for a final project.

II - started life as a new I Am The Map song, but we never made it.

III - started life as an I Am The Map song also, but again, we never managed to hold it together.

In late september 2010, I was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma (cancer) of the thyroid. The tumour enveloped my right laryngeal nerve and had to be surgically removed as it was compressing my wind pipe to the point where I could barely breathe.

My right vocal chord was paralysed from then on, the nerve being saved, but pretty damaged by the surgery and made worse by chemo and radiotherapy. I couldn't sing - this was after being the vocalist for what came to be known as 'We Gather Together.'

Ursa Lluna was a development from an earlier solo recording project and gave me something to focus on and build some hope for as I went through treatment and recovered. It had to be instrumental and due to my weakened state, I could only work on music in brief bursts.

I played a lot during the summer/autumn of 2011, having recovered from treatment and been given the all clear. Mostly open mic nights as I couldn't find a home for this stuff really.

Later that year I joined 'Self Loathing' and helped to get 'Piranha' going; Ursa Lluna took a permanent hiatus.

I still like these songs.

I'm revisiting them now as Mycelium.

Thanks to Scoob, Jim and Jack for the recording. Everyone who came out to see me play. Marcus for sharing gigs with me and my family for all of their support and encouragement.

I'm still here making music.
